R&H Suburb Profile CALLIOPE

Calliope a town in Central Queensland, near the junction of the Bruce and Dawson highway, 525km north of Brisbane. At the 2006 census, the population was more than 1500.

Since the end of the gold rush era, primary industry has been the district's mainstay, with the production of beef cattle, dairying, pigs, crops, fruit and vegetables. These days tourism can be added to the list.

Attractions include the Port Curtis Historical Village, situated on the banks of the Calliope River, as well as the Boyne River. A dam on Boyne River has resulted in the creation of a man-made lake. Lake Awoonga supplies water to the city of Gladstone, the townships of Calliope and other towns in the region.

The Calliope Shire has a sub-tropical climate with an average rainfall of 890mm per year. Average temperatures range from between 31 to 22 degrees from summer to winter respectively.

In recent years Calliope has undergone significant growth that has coincided with the expansion of the Gladstone region (situated about 15km south west of Calliope) and large scale development of local industry. This trend is expected to continue.

Calliope offers all the major services including shops, primary school, childcare facility, council chambers, post office, hotels, a motel, service stations, nursing home, bowls and golf club, golf course, sporting and equestrian grounds and parklands.
