Balmain is a peninsula suburb in Sydney’s inner-west, located on the Balmain peninsula in the local government area of the Municipality of Leichhardt.

Historically Balmain was one of Sydney's oldest working class suburbs where many of the city’s ferries were built. It is now regarded as one of Sydney’s trendiest and most affluent suburbs, with some of Australia's best-known entertainers calling it home. Darling Street is known for its boutiques, quality restaurants and cafes. Balmain has a large numbers of new and traditional pubs, and eating options are plentiful, with buzzing cafes and restaurants.

The Leichhardt Council area is well serviced by Sydney Buses, Metro Light Rail, Sydney Ferries and CityRail. Wharves located at Thames Street, Elliot Street and Darling Street, Balmain East. Services run to Circular Quay.

Residents enjoy the benefits of living so close to Sydney’s CBD, with a choice of many public and private schools. There are also several hospitals nearby.

Balmain was the setting for the Australian film The Sum of Us, which starred Jack Thompson, John Polson and Russell Crowe.
